Last night, I finally got the chance to take my wife, 13 year-old-daughter, and her friend to see "Pirates." My daughter Anna and her friend Olivia had already seen the movie once before, but as they are smitten with Orlando, they jumped at the chance to see it again. So, off the four of us went to the multiplex at the local mall.
After fifteen minutes of commercials and previews (one of which was the Haunted Mansion trailer-I thought the effects look pretty good--it was great to see the three hitchhiking ghosts!), the movie finally started.
As everybody is saying, the film seems pretty good. I was enjoying picking out the references here and there to the ride, but it seemed to me that no one else was. At least, I didn't hear anyone chuckling as I did at certain scenes that are directly from the attraction.
However, about a half-hour into the flick, the mall lost power and the screen went dark. After a collective "AWWW!" from the audience at this, I heard one guy way in the back immediately pipe up with "Please remain seated and keep your hands and arms inside the boat. The movie will resume momentarily." At that, everyone started laughing at this new version of a Pirates "breakdown."
After about 15 minutes of murmurs and wise-cracks in the dark, we had had enough. We wound up leaving the theater and got our tickets refunded. We'll try again this weekend, and hopefully, this time around, there'll be no more breakdowns! At least, this experience DID add to making the movie seem more like the ride!
