The Official Albums for 2008!

cm,

I appreciate your comments. Thank You.

If I may though, I view my explanations as 'reasons' as opposed to 'excuses'. It may very well be just semantics, or the fact that it is me stating the reasons (or making the excuses). But that is my belief.

I assume that you read my post concerning "Pirates of the Caribbean" a few pages back. As for "The Haunted Mansion", the update to the attraction did not included any musical element - just the bride's speech (as far as audio goes). The Wedding March has never been included, nor has The Portrait Gallery or the Seance cues. Like the "Yo Ho" track, the "Grim Ginning Ghosts" track is an expansion of the song. The addition of the bride had no musical impact. If the tracks were actual ride-thrus, they would definitely be included. I also would have titled the tracks "Pirates of the Caribbean" and "The Haunted Mansion".

Also, I don't feel the 'need' to post here. I do, because I want to. We are all passionate about Disney Music and sometimes things happen that confuse us. By participating here, I can explain why some things happen and give a little insight to how the Music Business works. Like I posted earlier, I don't do this to make what you feel is disappointing acceptable, but to give you a better understanding of why.

Once again, I really do appreciate your comments.

Many thanks,
Randy Thornton

PS - If you believe that a petition had or will ever have any sway in my decision-making-process, I've got some swampland in Florida to sell y... wait, that actually worked didn't it. Never mind.

Randy,

I hope you didn't take my post as an accusation that you are making excuses. I sincerely mean it when I say I respect the fact that you are posting the "why's" here for everyone to understand. I may not personally agree with the end result, but I do understand the reasoning that lead to that end. Though I may not be jumping for joy over the 2008 albums, if we could look back a few years to the 6 disc Disneyland set where I know you really had a lot more free reign, I couldn't possibly have been more impressed. You're obviously talented. I know how Disney sometimes can hold that back with red tape, and in a case of "Must appeal to average park guest" like the yearly (or every other yearly now) park albums, you did the best you could.

I still think a petition would be a great idea though - seems to be all the rave these days. Perhaps we could start a petition to release Maelstrom music - that's the troll ride, right? ;)

Oh - and you know I totally forgot to respond to one of the key points of your post, Randy. Yes, I saw your explanation of the logic behind Pirates - very interesting and made a lot of sense. Not something that would have crossed my mind, but I can totally see what you mean. As for Mansion, I enjoy both instrumental and actual ride audio (narration included). It's fun to have both versions. I'd be THRILLED with a track that included the new creaking sound effects in the stretch room, the new bride dialogue, etc. Call me geeky, but I think that stuff is cool.

I know you had mentioned that there would be an explanation forth-coming about why the Nemo and Gran Fiesta tracks start and end mid-verse. Did you get the chance to post that yet? Not sure if I missed it, but I'm definitely curious. That drove me nuts in the Nemo track!

of the people ive spoken to over time they all would give in the hundreds of dollars for a cd of this music by broughton i myself would gladly pay 3,000 or more for this music.
Please, not before investing $20 on a keyboard with working shift, apostrophe, and comma keys. :D

Hey, Randy, I will send you an unopened box of Lucky Charms for this music!

I think I should clear some things up.

WDWGuy,
Please don't think that I believe your devotion is a bad thing. I most certainly don't. Your hard work in letting folks know of Mr. Broughton is quite commendable. But you should know that I look at suggestions made here in equal light. Dr. Know expressed interest in the load music from "O Canada!", and several others have discussed what they'd like as well over the years. It's all part of the community. The inclusion of any track only depends on rights and clearances, whether an attraction has been represented, or it is a new installation. Those are the determining factors. My PS statement you quoted was just a bad attempt at humor. You should feel a sense of pride in what you have done.

cm,
I didn't take your post to be accusatory in any way. I thought you had very well reasoned statements. What I wrote was more for me to confirm where I am coming from. I tried to write in a light-hearted way to insure that it couldn't be misinterpreted - hence the bad joke that appears to have offended WDWGuy. But, obviously, I didn't do so well.

I will be posting about "Big Blue World", Caballeros, as well as some info about a porcupine(for you) soon. It's gonna be a little wordy, as I need to explain some of the recording techniques that are used for attraction recordings - which sometimes force my hand in presentation on CD. So it may be one post or may even be episodic, but I'll try to get it going soon.

Jay - make that a Large box, and you gotta deal! (JOKE). :D

Thanks for listening!!

Randy

this is just my thought. i'm pretty sure horizons and dr. know and prob others might agree with me on this, that we would have gladly taken timekeeper music over ellen's energy adventure. don't get me wrong we love the music from EEA just as much as timekeeper. but since a track from EEA had already been released and timekeeper has had none released whatsoever, we would have gladly taken it, even if released once, that is all it takes. i would go see timekeeper JUST for the music, same that i do for EEA nowadays. but now it is too late to release it, so... i guess we will have to wait for the VERY VERY VERY far future to hear it released, as you said before, i might be 90 years old, i am 24 now, when i get to hear it, but oh well. i think there should be a way for the studios to release it whenever they want for a price and the composer can sell it too for a price and the studio gets a percentage or something, idk. again, this is just my thought.

Randy- I know you don't think my devotion is a bad thing. i know you like mr. broughton's music as much as i do. but it is just frustrating to me and others to not be able to hear more music from attractions with 1 track released already like from EEA and mine and others favorite and MOST WANTED timekeeper. everywhere i look and people i talk to they all want the music from timekeeper even some other composers i speak too regularly. what would have to be done to get timekeeper music released, even just a short piece like the future theme or overall theme?

Prelude: NEEEEERDDDDD ALERRRRRRT!!!!!

Ooh by Caballeros do you mean the timing by any chance? ;) From the cd audio alone the 2 singing loops don't seem to sync up.. I mean it happens often enough on track releases and frequently for parade unit transitions but just wondering how that came together for you. And comparing it to the ride the instrumental loop and the first singing loop seem synced but it loses it at "we sing and we samba," then more at "oh yes I don't know"(though it seems to almost be back in sync with the ride here), some more when the drum and trumpets start immediately after, and then more with "We're three Caballeros," all of which happening slightly sooner in the ride than on the track. It's all compared to a moving video of course where moving for 2 seconds can change the delay for the audio to reach you of course but that's what I've gathered from some brief comparisons.

And since you brought up the mansion...you mentioned nothing musically had changed with the mansion updates... but I had a quick question about WDW's.. A friend who is very into all things mansion related and who works out there noticed that all of the music since the refurbishment is at a lower pitch now. Do you know anything about this? Also do you know anything on what appear to be new AA vocals such as the executioner?

Mommy....make it stop.

WDWGuy08...might I suggest that instead of beating Randy to death with Bruce Broughton requests from now until you are 90, you might try writing to Santa Claus? I'm sure that Bruce Broughton himself is gratified by your interest in his music, as I'm sure he's renewed his ADT contract. We ALL appreciate that you like Bruce Broughton's music, but this isn't the Bruce Broughton Music Forum. He is BUT ONE of the MANY composers we celebrate on here. Your efforts to keep people informed are admirable and your passion for it equally...shall we say...notable. I know that restraint isn't a hallmark of your web presence, but perhaps the understanding that sometimes we kill the things we love with too much attention would serve well in this case.

I have an even better suggestion, I think. WDWGuy08, why not *create* a Bruce Broughton Music Forum, and post all requests there instead of here? ;D

And why would you wish that upon Santa? What did he ever do to you? Are you still stinging cuz he never got you that pony?

I can certainly see WHY Randy wouldn't include Timekeeper on an Official Album. It's not current. The only way I could ever see it appearing would be on a "musical history" set, like DL's. Or, some kind of Bruce Broughton CD compilation... There really is no point in pestering to no end about Timekeeper.

Randy, thanks in advance for answering questions about the Nemo & Gran Fiesta Tour tracks. I'm hoping that the wordy response will answer some of my other questions too, but I'll ask them here, just in case you can bake them into your response about the other things.

Ok, so, a while back you said that when it comes time to create an OA, you ask WDI for tracks that they feel best represent the attractions. So, you get something that might not have all the elements, but is something they feel shows off their work the best. However, when you get these tracks, it seems like you further edit them to create something you feel flows better musically, right? I guess my question is, how much freedom do you really have with the attraction mixes? Sometimes you make it seem like what you're given is what we get, but then other times you make the choices. What's the scoop?

Something else I thought about that's related...are you given specific instructions on where tracks fit in a ride through, or something like that? With new attractions and things, it's not like they fly you out to whatever park is in question to go on the attraction yourself. What kind of notes do you get from WDI as far as order goes? Sorry to ask all these, but I'm just curious how you put together an album without having to get on these attractions firsthand.

Thanks.

Disneyphilip, if it wasn't for your recent TDL question, I'd wonder if you were on this board to do anything but take offense at every little thing that was said. (notice, no ;) )

i am sorry if i post so much about broughton and his music, it's just i want to know all about it and learn interesting facts about the music, like, how it was made, what was used, where it was recorded, any funny stories from the sessions, if it is able to be released and how one can get it released and how much it would cost, etc... i just love disney park music, especially broughtons, he does an outstanding job. i just want the music so bad. it really frustrates and upsets me to not be able to listen to the rest of the unreleased music from attractions he scored like tk and omd. i listen to his music over and over and over again, every day, like his pre-show fill track for eea and theme from hista. that is why i want the theme from timekeeper so much, so i can add it to my list of tracks i listen to repeatedly. i mean, take a look several pages back where i took a direct screen shot of the play count for the medley to eea. i listen to these tracks countless times.

i have been doing everything i can think of, for the past 2 years, come this may 15, to try and get his music released. i would even settle for the additional and unreleased 10 seconds of music, contained in the final spill cue, for eea, on a future oa. but my goal is to obtain the theme from timekeeper, as you already know and i have said before. i do not wish to annoy others by my wandering and imaginative mind when i talk about broughton, as i tend to ramble on about it, cause i enjoy his music so much. so i am sorry to those who find it annoying.

mr. broughton himself has even said to me that i have done more than anyone he knows, to try to get his music released and i was proud of that and what i do and am doing. i was very pleased, when mr. broughton recently informed me, that i, "might" have had a hand in getting more of his music released, on this years oa. he was also surprised, that disney released that much music from sse, on it. he said that i should pat myself on the back for it, and i have, btw!

i believe something needs to change, in the very near future. anyone should be able to get this music wether it be all of it or a track or two by paying for it. wether they purchase and obtain it from the composer or from the studio, in this case, disney and mr. broughton. the orchestra and composer and studio still get a percentage and hold the rights to the music but the consumer can still purchase the tracks. heck, bring back the forever systems. or create a forever-like system on the itunes music store or your own on the walt disney world website. get the word out there about it and advertise it.

so in closing, i do whatever i can, to support mr. broughton, to get more of his beautiful music released. i purchase his releases to do just that. i also do what i can to inform and educate others and "newcomers" of mr. broughton and his musical works. i then lead them to places where they may purchase his music so that they may support him as well and enjoy his music as i do.

i've been wondering this for a long time now and would like to know if you can answer it for me, please, mr. thornton???!!! i have asked mr. broughton and his manager and they do not know.

the cues from EEA are listed on ASCAP, but some are missing. what are the actual titles for those? i have made up mock titles for them:

back...stage? (when bill nye and ellen leave the jeopardy sound stage and then ellen pops on with the rules)

enter the diarama scene (when we go in the room with all the dinosaurs)

i would also like to know which cue is the "pea brain" cue. the short 6 second instrument we hear when ellen is all alone in the theater I film. or the longer piece when the dinosaur roars and we turn and enter the diarama scene.

here is the order the tracks go, in ride order:

Universe Of Energy Exterior (ASCAP) - Composed by Russell Brower
Pre-Show Fill (ASCAP)
Fog (ASCAP)
"Back....Stage?"
Pre-Show Spill (ASCAP)
About To Expand (ASCAP) /Big Bang (ASCAP) - these two tracks are separate but segue into one another in the film
Pea Brain (ASCAP)
Enter The Diarama Scene
Ellen's Energy Diarama (ASCAP)
Birth Of Civilization (ASCAP)
Solar Energy (ASCAP)
Windmills (ASCAP)
No Easy Answers (ASCAP)
Final Spill (ASCAP) - contains 10 seconds of additional/unreleased music at 2:27 into it

any help would be greatly appreciated. i would also update my cue sheet on my website with this info, thanks!

What is Bruce Broughton's shoe size? Boxers or briefs? Does he like warm summer rain and dark chocolate? Does he have sensitive toes? What are his pet names? Randy...help us out here.
Oh, man, Bill, thanks a LOT for the mental pictures...(shudder). Now I won't be able to sleep at night...
