What is a "Trackback" in Blogs?

I thought it was a listing of sites that linked to another site. I have some weird listings on my blog, a lot of online gambling sites.
Oh, so the "Trackbacks" list is comprised of sites that link to the particular blog entry? If that's true, then I assume that the gambling sites are bogus "trackbacks".
Well, a "trackback" is supposed to be for notifying the original blog poster that you have referred to their blog entry in another blog.
Unfortunately, most blog websites receive tons of "trackback spam" each and every day.
I have deleted all of your trackbacks. Gadzooks, just one of your blog entries had over 1,000 trackbacks to various poker sites!
I just blocked one of the major offending IP addresses, but, in the end, I will probably turn off trackbacks, which is what many blog websites have ended up doing in order to stop the spam.
If someone really wants to notify you that they have mentioned your blog entry elsewhere, they can do so in the "Comments" section, which is only available to members who are logged in, so there is little chance for any monkey business.
I'm not sure that outbound calls to the Akismet servers are working properly as of right now. I've got support tickets in with our host and the IP.Board/IP.Blog programmers. In the mean time, you may experience a delay when attempting to post a comment in the blogs. Do not hit the 'Add Reply' button more than once. It may take as long as 90 seconds (gadzooks!), but your comment will eventually be posted.
IP.Blog's code has been fixed and now there is no longer a delay when posting comments to blog entries. 
Akismet is doing the job. Hundreds of trackback spam entries have already been stopped dead in their tracks.
Some of the stuff showing up in the Akismet Log is bizarre. One trackback, I kid you not, was for "zoo sex."
