WDR Update 2010

I apologize for my absence over the last several months. It's been quite busy 'round here, as it's been a time of transition as well as brand new opportunities. Within the last six months I've been able to generate numerous project proposals and we're working to streamline the administrative processes regarding our vintage releases.

On that note, more titles are on the way!! As a matter of fact, we're trying something out with Amazon and their digital download service. It's a special promotion program allowing Amazon to have an exclusive with all of our new catalog titles for the first five weeks of release. After those five weeks, the titles will be available on iTunes and other download services. That's why you've been seeing titles appear on Amazon recently and nowhere else.

You've been waiting quite a while for the next batch of vintage titles, so I'm not going to make you wait until they are officially available to let you know what's coming. All of these titles should be up by the end of February. They are:

:cd: CD | :itunes: [itunes='http://itunes.apple.com/us/album/perri-a-story-with-songs-told/id357433647']iTunes[/itunes] | MP3

There's also the other project I mentioned I was working on (so many months ago). I wanted to have this one out by the end of last year, but we've been having some technical difficulties that have delayed the project. I'm still working on it, and I hope to have that done soon as well.

When I have the actual release dates, I'll post them.

Thanks for your patience! I'll try to respond to the messages many of you have left me here. It's still very busy, but I'll try to get back to you all within the next week or so.

Hope you all had a great holiday season, and I can say it looks like we're in for a pretty great 2010.

Lookin forward to these releases. Thanks for keepin us informed. Perri and Summer Magic are the ones I am lookin forward to most. My copy of Mickey Mouse And Friends that I picked up at the kiosk in WDW is one of my most charished posessions.
I can only wonder what the other releases are right now.
I wanna guess a proper Bedknobs & Broomsticks soundtrack.

Thanks for the update Randy!! Great to see the Perri album released. One of my favorites to listen to.

Let's hope some new park music makes its way out. And it better be music from WDW, rather than Disneyland!

HeHe! For sure! Forgetting that God (Jobs) is on Disney's BOD, with the iTunes Store accounting for over 70% of worldwide digital music sales, I can't say that I'd be in a hurry to grant exclusive rights to someone else. All I'd be doing is holding back sales of my own product for however long those rights lasted.

I'd rather that WDR was announcing some sort of agreement to distribute their music in FLAC (lossless) format.

Hey Randy, thanks for the news! I was just going to try to contact you to see what's up but thought I'd check here first... sure enough, you're here giving an update.

Randy, do you know if Amazon will start carrying the other vintage titles that are on iTunes only right now? There are some I haven't purchased yet and would rather purchase MP3s from Amazon.

Thanks,
Trent

P.S. For anyone who hasn't seen these yet, tonight I stumbled across some insightful interviews with Randy at mouseclubhouse.com ... I think I had read some earlier articles but didn't realize that there have been more every few months.

Randy: Thanks for the update.

If I can make a request: Could the Hall of Presidents return as a selection? I know this was part of the Wonderland Music system, but I don't think it's made an appearance on iTunes.

 I don't want to appear to be a negative person to folks here but I am starting to think that we are going to have to wait another year or two for the next 5 or anything Walt related. I am expressing a feeling of sadness and frustration at the whole Disney company. I think If we wait long enough there won't be anyone left alive to buy or ask if there are plans to release any of the classic films that deserve a release. Can't watch Song of the South, can't get a lot of classic Disney films released, can't get any classic recordings released in a timely matter, can't have Disney Treasures anymore. The Disney company is sitting on a gold mine, the Walt era.
Enough of that, I think most of us here know this frustration.
Just thinking about some possible releases in the future for fun, a Phil Harris on the Disneyland Label CD, a Sterling Holloway "box set" with all the Sterling narrated albums, or a Winnie the Pooh "box set" with all the classic Pooh albums with Sterling on it. A Paul Smith box set, with all the True Life Adventures soundtracks.
How about a Paul Frees collection, or a Thurl Ravenscroft CD?
My Daughter would like a Captian E.O. related CD.
The Disneyland anthology series has some amazing soundtracks.
Anything related to the original EPCOT Center.
I could go on and on.
I know there is probably good stuff in the works, I don't want to appear to be negative. I would like to spark some discussion mainly.
I would like to read more ideas from other collectors as well.
Also, the Amazon downloads were in 256. Can we get a lossless download?

Very true!

With all the crappy TV shows that have already been released on DVD, I'm shocked that Disney hasn't really done anything with the entire Walt Disney anthology television series — 1,224 episodes spanning 52 seasons from October 27, 1954 through December 24, 2008.

Book plug...

The Wonderful World of Disney Television: A Complete History

Well, I hope that I may be able to alleviate at least a little of your frustration with some pretty cool news.

But first –

I again must apologize for being away for so long, and I still haven't been able to respond to my messages. But as I mentioned in my last post, it's been extremely busy 'round here. At the moment, I have 12 albums I'm working on, and I just finished 5 new vintage titles that will be available at the end of April. None of these albums have been available since their initial release on vinyl – not even The Wonderland Music Store.

These vintage albums are:

tn_gallery_321_2_167957.jpg

Muscle Beach Party (STER 3314)
:cd: CD | :itunes: [itunes='http://itunes.apple.com/us/album/muscle-beach-party-soundtrack/id375719708']iTunes[/itunes] | :mp3: MP3

Of the 5 new titles, this was released on CD by Rhino back in the early '90s. But this new release is fully restored from the original 4 track master.

tn_gallery_321_2_171289.jpg

Billy Storm (STER 3315)
:cd: CD | :itunes: [itunes='http://itunes.apple.com/us/album/billy-storm/id375719750']iTunes[/itunes] | :mp3: MP3

This is a unique one. Billy sang on The Sherman Bros. Tinpanorama singing “Puppy Love Is Here To Stay (he also sings on another album in this group of 5). With Annette's success, the label tried to break another teen pop star – that was Billy. Tutti Camarata was also beginning to experiment with the concept of a full length album. To Tutti, the long playing record offered the artist an opportunity to expand the listening experience. To him, music was released as 'singles' (even 78rpms are essentially singles). Then when the LP was introduced, it became just a collection of singles. Tutti wanted to make use of the extra time the LP allowed – to let the music develop. For Billy's album, side one has only 1 track, and it's 16 minutes long. It's a cover of “Lover Come Back”. It's what I would call and 'odyssey' mix – it begins in one musical style, and evolves into several others. It's once continuous piece. Tutti would later do an 'odyssey' album, but instead of variations on a theme, it was a medley – one song seamlessly transitioning into the next. That album was Cocktails for Two – with Mary Martin” (ahh, miss ya Bill!). Enough useless trivia. It's an interesting album. It's not for everyone, but I found it interesting. To me it was the embryonic beginning of the 'Concept Album'.

tn_gallery_321_2_127604.jpg

Maurice Chevalier and Hayley Mills Take You To Teen Street (BV 3313)
:cd: CD | :itunes: [itunes='http://itunes.apple.com/us/album/maurice-chevalier-hayley-mills/id375719790']iTunes[/itunes] | :mp3: MP3

Another interesting album. Very 1960's innocent 'teen' album. These songs are introduced by kitschy dialog and banter between Mr. Chevalier and Miss Mills about the 'teen' experience. Songs from Annette, Billy Strange, Billy Storm, and The Sylte Sisters. This is another 'Odyssey Mix' and the songs and dialog transition.

tn_gallery_321_2_5174.jpg

That Darn Cat (STER 3334)
:cd: CD | :itunes: [itunes='http://itunes.apple.com/us/album/that-darn-cat-original-soundtrack/id375719907']iTunes[/itunes] | :mp3: MP3

Louis Prima's version of The Sherman Bros. title song starts off the album (FYI - The original Bobby Darin version that appears in the film is not ours to release). It continues with Bob Brunner's score cues and ends with The Bobby Troop Trio's version of the title song. Though Mr. Troop's version has been released before, this is a recently discovered STEREO version!

tn_gallery_321_2_122663.jpg

Silly Symphonies (DQ 1335)
:cd: CD | :itunes: [itunes='http://itunes.apple.com/us/album/silly-symphonies/id375719968']iTunes[/itunes] | :mp3: MP3

I had this album as a kid. I thought it would be the songs from the Silly Symphonies. It wasn't (Actually, the songs are covers of things like “Susie the Little Blue Coup” and “Johnny Fedora and Alice Blue-Bonnet” – not even Silly Symphonies). And I was very disappointed!! There was no internet then, or I would have been posting like mad (I had to settle for sending smoke signals from the mouth of the family cave). Honestly, I'm not that fond of this album (probably because of that childhood trauma), but I've received many requests for it over the years. So, here it is.

Though there will not be an Official Album release this year, I am working on some projects for Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom's Anniversary next year. I won't be doing a box like A Musical History of Disneyland because 1) It would be too similar to Disneyland's, and 2) Disneyland had to wait until she was 50, so her sister is gonna wait too. Instead of one big project, I want to do several small ones geared around The Magic Kingdom. A new Official Album will be released then.

I haven't forgotten EPCOT. She turns 30 in 2012. I have similar plans for that anniversary too.

As for soundtracks, I've been working on one for several months now. It's not a “Walt–Era” film, and may not be of too much interest to the Disney Fan Community in general, but it is an important bit of history (well, to me anyway). There is no street date set, but I'm hoping I can finish it by the end of the year.

I'm still continuing to push for the availability of Lossless Downloads. I want them too. But I can only keep bangin' on the door. FYI, the recently released Beatles Stereo USB drive is not lost on me either! For those who may not know, The Beatles Stereo set has been released on a cool (Apple-shaped) USB and features an image gallery of all the covers and ephemera of the physical set and includes 320k MP3s as well as.... 24bit 44.1 FLAC files of the albums. FLAC is a perfect lossless format, but with the Bit-Depth of 24, theoretically these digital files are superior to CD! Oooh, what I can do with that model!

Well, I hope that I was able to lift some of that frustration. I know it doesn't solve everything, but maybe it sheds a little light in the darkness.

Have a great weekend!!

:D

Hmmmm... ideas for Magic Kingdom projects... how about the original music to the Electrical Water Pageant that has played on the Seven Seas Lagoon in front of the Magic Kingdom every night for going on 40 years now? Just across Bay Lake from MK is the longest running show in history -- the Hoop Dee Doo Revue!
