The great movie ride closed in february 2003 and is set to reopen this month. What changes will take place?
So far i know;
*there will be a new audio system
*the video at the end will be updated
*a new script (something like in the jungle cruise)
*and i think they will be replaceing the fantasia scene (it wasn't that great anyway, it was justy wind, lights, and a video)
does anybody know anything else?

They were painting the spires while I was there in May. It looks very nice on the outside now. I was so afraid they would turn it into an "oops! we broke something so now we have to take this ride..." It's bound to happen one of these days - that stupid hat was just the beginning of the end.

I heard rumors that Spaceship Earth will become a roller coaster as soon as Mission:Space is finished. While I am outraged at the thought of such a thing - I keep thinking "hmm - maybe they'll finially have enough money to take that wand down..."

Glad to see the Movie Ride is coming back - and with an updated movie too! We haven't seen that since 1994-1995, wasn't it?

For Me THE GREAT MOVIE RIDE was one of those attractions that should have been beter than it ever really was.......it was more like THE "ok" MOVIE RIDE ............but the idea was there........and I'm gad such an attraction was developed for that park. I also could not understand why Disney didn't come up with there own theme song for that attraction..(instaed of Hooray for Hollywood). It's was like using "yo-ho-Ho and a bottle of Rum " for Pirates of the Caribbean.........just a cleche song. I always thought that song from ANNIE LETS GO TO THE MOVIES could have been re-done and reworked into "LET'S GO THROUGH THE MOVIES"!!!

But "Let's go to the movies" wasn't Disney's own song...

But point taken.

So they have or have not changed the Fantasia room. Considering that most of the Fantasyland Darkrides are more impressive than that room, they really should update it. A Chernabog scene would go over well....well with some people at least.

Also, Spaceship Earth is not going to become just a roller coaster. That rumor has been spreading around. It will be more than just that. They have even gotten Ray Bradbury to re-introduce some of his original concepts for Spaceship Earth. It's going to be more informative than just a high-speed thrill ride. It's also going to have large screen film used throught and be centered around the concept of "time". Of course this is only what is set to happen so far, so things could change, but as of now it's not going to become another Test Track...

Thanks Ben - I feel a little better about it now. I didn't think it would be "just" a roller coaster - but you can never tell with Disney nowadays. Thanks for clearing that up!

Test track isn't just a roller coaster, but I don't think that was much consolation for those who loved World of Motion. While the new Spaceship Earth sounds promising it'll be a shame if we lose all those great Audio-Animatronic tableaux, as they are in short supply nowadays.

Yes, I do agree with that. Although Spaceship Earth sounds interesting; I will definitely miss AA's. I also didn't mean to lump Test Track in as a roller coaster, but I meant it as strictly a thrill ride. It's a fun ride, but it's too bad none of the AA's or props from WOM could find some kind of home in Test Track. We'll see what happens with SE. At least Mission Space is getting tremendous reviews, so although Horizons is gone, it's not such a glaring hole.

I don't mind replacements as long as they are better than what they replaced in some way.

But as these new attractions are pretty much requiring that the existing structure be either gutted or demolished completely it's a shame that the originals like Horizons or World of Motion couldn't have just been updated and the new attractions placed in a new space. We'll probably never see that level of AA extravaganza again and it's a shame to get rid of the few we have left, especially when the space they occupy isn't the only option.

I can't imagine that they would ever demolish the superstructure of SE. It's Epcot's singular icon and I've always favored it over Cinderella's Castle and the MGM water tower as a WDW park identifier. IMO, only the Tree of Life really outdoes it in terms of aesthetic scope. I look forward to them ripping off that god-awful Mickey appendage and am curious to see what they do inside, but I don't think they'd have the chutzpah to tear the globe itself down.

I think we all need to acknowledge that the primary reason SE is finally getting gutted is because AT&T finally yanked their support for the pavillion. Corporate sponsorship is a blessing in that it gives Disney some extra money to play with, but it also means they are beholden to the wishes of said sponsor. I'd be interested to see what the Imagineers come up with when designing for a different sponsor...or no sponsor at all.

I do agree with those who will miss the AA, but on riding it for the umpteenth time on my trip last summer, it had become painfully apparent that it was time for a change. As long as the new ride is semi-educational, I think the change will be a good thing.
