Sort of OT: Toxic Audio Off Broadway

This is SORT of on topic, because Toxic Audio played as the opening act for the B&TB show at the Disney-MGM studios in the late 1990's and early 2000's. And several of the "Toxins" have been in Voices of Liberty, American Vybe and Disney MC's through the years.

But now they're on their own, in an Off Broadway show that has been nominated for a Drama Desk Award!

My husband and I have been Toxic Audio fans for several years already. I'm originally from NY, he's from NJ and we moved to FL nearly 4 years ago. Fortunately, that gave us the opportunity to "discover" Toxic Audio circa 2001 and watch them grow from playing high schools, malls, county fairs (or not...darn rain!) and small theaters to their current big show Off Broadway.

We went back up to NY this past weekend, specifically to see Toxic "do their stuff" in their new show and we were NOT disappointed with what we saw. Their repertoire is filled with catchy, well-known songs ranging from the early 20th century to today. Their harmonies (some of which have been known to bring me to tears, they're so beautiful) and "instrumental voices" are flawless and while you're listening to them, you can close your eyes and admire the magic that their soundman does (and boy, does that theater have awesome acoustics or what?). Their ability to add humor and audience participation makes it all the more interesting. Their costuming and lighting are brand-new, just for NY and it only adds to the show.

My only complaints? Some of my favorite songs weren't included (sigh...I wasn't consulted or "The Water Is Wide," "Easter Island Head" and "Hooked On A Feeling" would be IN THERE [wink]. Then again, a few of my lesser-favorites AREN'T in there, so I suppose there's always trade-offs), and I'd like more merchandise besides T-shirts and CDs (we already had "his and hers" of the latter...now we've got 2 shirts too, but we want MORE! Though the free posters were REALLY cool).

Anyway, if you're in NY, GO SEE TOXIC AUDIO IN LOUDMOUTH! We saw them twice this past weekend and are coming back up for 2 or 3 shows in July...perhaps earlier, if we can get a good deal on airline tickets [grin]. We're looking forward to the Drama Desk Awards this Sunday (the 16th) at 9pm Eastern, since Toxic Audio was nominated for Most Unique Show. The ceremony will be webcast live on TheaterMania.com and we're keeping our fingers crossed REALLY tightly.

Guess you're going to have to stay on my back because I have NO idea. Joe and I weren't really a cappella fans until we discovered Toxic Audio and even now, our tastes are limited. I've only listened to Rockpella a couple of times, so I'm not up to date on what they've done (or not). You might want to post the question on rec.music.a-cappella.

Sorry.

Hi Sharon! I thought that was you posting on the All That Chat message boards! :)

I personally would love to be able to catch one of their shows, but living in MD it's hard to get up to NY and see any more than one show at a time (limited by the bus). We already have tickets to see The Frogs in July (with my beloved Nathan!) and possibly going back to see The Producers again (without Nathan or Matthew this time... ) so that's a big chunk of change right there.

But I'm a big fan of a capella myself - we have an outstanding all-male group at my college (Drop the Octave is their name) and they are amazing - very professional-sounding. We have to get there at least an hour ahead of time to get good seats. :) I keep saying they should make a CD, but three of their best singers graduated this year so it looks like it won't happen. But you can't beat good ol' a capella!

Ayep...that was me . How many people named "sharonkurland" do you know that you'd think it WASN'T me?? (as far as I know, there are 2...me and some girl in the Navy. And I'm not even a "Kurland" anymore...it's my maiden name, but I had used it online since 1984 so I kept it for that, even after Joe and I got married. I use my married name for everything else )

I've always enjoyed barbershop and was even in a Sweet Adeline chorus when I lived in Tampa. I've only just starting listening the "other" kinds of a cappella since "discovering" Toxic Audio so I'm still learning.

But Toxic Audio IS pretty awesome. They're up for a Drama Desk award tonight (Most Unusual Performance) and will be performing at ceremony, as well. It's going to be webcast live on http://www.theatermania.com/content/show.c..._show_id=103178, starting at 9pm Eastern, so maybe you'll be able to see it. If not, hopefully they'll have a nice, long run so you'll get a chance to see them in NY one of these days. You should make them a priority though, IMHO...they're THAT good!
