Looking for Rare LP

Hi folks - I'm reposting this from Rodentsections, apologies to those who frequent both places who have to deal with this two times. Seems to be more vinyl / shellac collectors on this forum.

I'm looking to purchase an LP called "Moonlight Time in Old Hawaii". It's music by George Bruns and I suspect that some of the music may have once been used at Walt Disney World. If you have a copy in decent shape, please PM me and we can discuss prices.

"Moonlight Time in Old Hawaii" (Composed by George Bruns) originally appeared as part of the underscore for the 'International Gardens' section of the Ford Pavilion at the 1964 World's Fair. At the fair, you made your way through the 'International Gardens' on your way to the 'Magic Skyway' part of the exhibit.

"Moonlight Time in Old Hawaii" is included (along with all of the 'International Gardens' cues) on the World's Fair Boxed set to be released this February. I don't recall an LP by this name, just this piece of music. My research has shown that this cue has never before been (LEGALLY) released.

About this set - you may have noticed that I removed my previous post and that the set release date has moved from November to February. Though I will be posting about this in detail in the near future, I'll give y'all a brief update.

At the very last minute, I was given the OK to add more material (which also adds a Fifth Disc). But in order to build these additional tracks, I needed more time. So, we've moved the release date to February. This also coincides with the re-opening of Disneyland's "it's a small word". So, the set is still happening and there'll be even more stuff - it's all good. :D

Very good news, indeed, Randy. Thanks for clearing up the missing post; it's good to know it wasn't redlined at the last minute and can't wait to hear more about the 5th disc in the collection.

I can't wait. I will, especially since we are getting a fifth disc. I love the World's Fair. I love walking the site and visiting the small exhibit they have at the Queens Museum. I can't wait to see what new tracks you've found, Randy. Just the best news.

I haven't even posted in this thread yet :p

Should we preorder the set now before the price goes up for a 5th disc or anything? :D

Supposedly an LP of Hawaiian music by George Bruns exists, and is the original BGM for the Adventureland Veranda....

I have an old Adventureland Veranda loop. I didn't realize it was commercially available music. I'll have to check it out.

Thanks!

Alright, I just bought the LP. Will report when I can hold / listen to it. Will hopefully have the actual Veranda track soon as well, supposedly they both share many tracks but not all tracks found in one can be found in the other. Yes, it's called "Moonlight Time in Old Hawaii - The Hawaiian Strings Conducted by George Bruns". Released by Vault records #SLP 127. Year unknown. Tracks:

Side A: South Seas Island Music / Hawaiian Paradise / Moonlight and Shadows / To You, Sweetheart, Aloha / Paradise Isle / Song of Old Hawaii
Side B: Blue Hawaii / Moonlight Time in Old Hawaii / Sweet Lelani / Aloha Nui Hawaii / My Tane / Ka Pua

If I'm reading this right then this recording should predate its use in the 1964 World's Fair, meaning both the Ford Pavilion and Adventureland Veranda tracks were technically "needledrop". However, as I said, I will report when I know more, including the year.

So now that I have both the Adventureland Veranda area music in circulation online as well as the LP of George Bruns music, I can offer some commentary on the tracks. The Veranda loop which has been digitized and put online, apparently provided by Jack Wagner and dated mid-1973, is absolutely unrelated to the George Bruns music. The Bruns pieces did play in the Veranda from sometime in the mid or late 70's until 1993, and can be heard in part on this video Mike Lee took in 1992:

I have no doubt that the 1973 loop is authentic - it plays seamlessly - but the question then arises about the date printed on the reel to reel tape the loop was recorded from. Is it an installation date? A removal date? If it's the installation date, what played in the Veranda prior to the loop? Nothing? Or was it simply one of many recordings of the music to be switched in and out?

The Vault records release of "Moonlight Time in Old Hawaii" does clarify one point in this, which is in relation to the upcoming release of a track of this name by Randy in the World's Fair box set. The back of the LP sleeve clearly states that "Moonlight Time in Old Hawaii", "Ka Pua" and "Aloha Nui Hawaii" are original compositions by Bruns, meaning that the version used at the New York World's Fair was probably written by Bruns for the Fair or some time before, which also means that the version to be released on the NYWF CD set has, in all likelihood, never been released.

The Vault Record has no copyright date on it, and I'm not finding much better on my only other lead I have per the date, which is Vault Records' release immediately before the Bruns record, #126 'Waldo de los Rios and his Symphony-Pop Orchestra Play the International Hits". Rios died in 1977, so the Bruns record predates that, and Bruns recorded the record while in Disney's employ, as the sleeve clearly shows him standing next to the "Dopey Drive" sign.

According to Mike Lee at Widen Your World, both the Veranda version of the Bruns music and the LP version of the Bruns music have shared and exclusive tracks, so a comprehensive track listing of all the songs from the Veranda version of the music is not forthcoming. I, however, can enjoy listening to the record and thinking about eating a sweet and sour hot dog.

Not sure if this is related, but on the back of the album "The Famous Castle Jazz Band" (Good Time Jazz L=12030) from 1958, there are biographies of each member. Don Kinch and George Bruns at one time played in Harry Owen's Hawaiian orchestra prior to Bruns joining Disney in 1954.

Hmm...which makes me wonder when he actually wrote some of those songs. I'm guessing that the NYWF track was newly recorded for that loop, but was something Bruns pulled out of his many previous compisitions because it was already written and would fit in perfectly. It's all very interesting though, and kind of a neat little treasure hunt to find these old promo records, or rare recordings that not many people even knew about.

Foxxy, were you or Mike ever able to figure out which tracks from the LP intersected with the loop? I have a copy of the record, but I've never heard the full loop in situ...

:)
