How Many CDs Does the Average Collector Have?

How many CD's does the average collector have?

Ok, first of all, I could count music files, but I won't since that can open up a whole other topic.

Basically, I got to thinking about this as I noticed that a few of our resident posters/collectors (well, some don't post anymore, but...) have huge Disney CD collections. I wondered just how much all of us here collected compared to the average person. Now, I would count any physical media, like LP, cassette, and CD. My own collection is pretty large, and I was happy that I just went over the 600 mark and have 613 CD's currently. However, I know several others have twice as much as that.

It's not just us Disney collectors either. My dad has over 1,000 CD's of just general music. Another of my friends also has probably double that of any genre, artist, etc. He could open a music store. Anyway, I was just curious if most of you that post here actually have a lot of Disney music, or if it's more casual than that, and you just have a few that you've collected over the years.

Am I in the collecting minority?

I've never been a giant music collector mostly from money probably.. I did have a big box overfilled with CDs that I took from apartment to apartment but then I got the bright idea to buy a cd case and keep it in my car and within a couple months it was broken into and all of my CDs got stolen. Whoop-dee-doo, keep on sticking with that physical media stuff RIAA I love it. =P Now I'm pretty much entirely digital and most of my collection has admittedly come from the internet. As far as Disney music goes I buy the OAs, the Tokyo CDs, the Fantasmics, and the like. I don't have nearly all of them but I have a few. Those haven't seem to been stolen from my car yet... strange ;)

I am not a huge collector of CDs. I will usually buy any CD that is park related, whether's its an OA, a movie soundtrack that is used in the park, etc... I mainly purchase other music via itunes.

Since I'm now 100% digital, I have about 1,000 cds in boxes in the garage. Some day they'll become collector's items and I can have them appraised on Antiques Roadshow, and everyone will laugh at my stunned reaction when the appraiser tells me he's never seen such a thing and, after conferring with the other appraisers, he estimates they're worth about 10 times what I paid for them!

Or they'll blow away in the next hurricane...

:D

Digital, yes. I didn't mention in my original post, but my collection is also all digital at this point. The CD's are sitting, unused. Sometimes I'll check liner notes for reference, but I have not played the actual CD's, well, since ripping them.

I am mostly digital, and as such, I only have a certain amount of CDs, only 1 or 2 of which are Disney-related (bought the Wishes soundtrack on my last trip down).

I have a hope that Disney releases more of the park music on iTunes, because I love park music, and maybe (someday) we'll get fully official ride-throughs of certain rides that are no more, like Cranium Command, The Making Of Me, Goofy About Health, Horizons, Adventure Through Inner Space, El Rio Del Tiempo, and some Disneyland rides (since I've 0 knowledge of the Anaheim parks, help me out here!! ;D). Maybe we'll even get certain ride-throughs that we CAN'T get, either because we're screaming like hell (Rock 'N' Roller Coaster starring Aerosmith, PLEASE GOD) or because binaural technology doesn't entirely work (like Rafiki's Planet Watch, the new Haunted Mansion "floating voice" spiel in the stretching room, etc).

My collection is 99% "phisical media" - official CDs, vinyl, and cassettes with packaging and cover art, that can go on my shelf. I am only interested in "downloads" of things that are unavailable in an "official" physical version. Anything available in a physical format, I don't feel like I truly "own" it until I have the physical CD.

I am "old school" and will stick with physical media until if and when it completely disappears. And at that time, I'll still have my entire "physical" collection, including all-time favorites, on really-for-real "official" CD releases that I will NEVER get rid of, and never stop playing in that format. I also have a working turntable and cassette deck for playback of things that never got released on CD.

I like being able to go into a place like Virgin Megastore and look at a wide variety of music in person, hold it in my hand, pull out some cash, and it's mine. If they have what you want in stock, it's quick and anonymous, and less of a hassle than ordering through the mail, for my tastes.

If only Virgin stocked maidens instead of music.

I used to have far more CDs than I have now. I gradually sold them and now have about 100 -- mostly Disney and Jazz festival bands that iTunes hasn't picked up yet. Everything goes on the iPod now, and the CDs sit in a single storage box. I still buy the Park albums, and I love my DL Forever CDs. I gotta say, though, when Randy released the Musical History of Disneyland, 99% of my music wish list got fulfilled in one swoop! Everything else that gets released now is icing on the cake!

I still buy lots of music, but it's nearly all from iTunes now. I love the Disney archive series, and can't wait for the next wave, whenever it appears (Walt Disney's Song Parade would be awesome!).

I'm taking my family on our annual DL trek this summer, and I plan to buy the new Official Album. It'll actually be my first CD purchase since our previous DL trip!

Re: How many CD's does the average collector have?

I can't break the record (ouch, sorry) but I do have a couple of thousand CDs but they also include the ones I have burned myself from 40+ years of collecting vinyl - all of which are no longer available (if they were, I'd happily buy the digital versions) and record players are getting hard to find now - and there are probably a few dozen Disney ones. That, of course, doesn't include stuff downloaded from reputable Disney fan sites and burned to disc.
I doubt I would live long enough to listen to them all again
I have quite a few that I purchased from the US (I'm in the UK) including the latest 5 disc set which cost me less (inc postage) than a couple of CDs over here (good old exchange rate).

I'm not an iTunes fan (don't even have an iPod)

Re: How many CD's does the average collector have?

Mere rookie "collector" here with only about 25 Disney related CDs, although I have the 50th Anniversary A Musical history of Disneyland LE as my one true collectors piece. I still prefer the CD over iTunes, but if iTunes is the only place to get it then I buy. My dilemma now is what makes the best sense for replicating some of the loops that are researched here. Do I purchase all of the CDs which may contain some of the titles or do I purchase the individual titles from iTunes or Amazon MP3 if they exist?

I agree.
I have just reconstructed (partly) the DLRP Frontierland area music loop and, although a lot are from "Happy Trails" some of the ones that are not used will never be listened to again (sorry, not a Roy Rogers fan).

How much does the average collector have? More than 1.
