DLRP Keelboats BGM

Now here's a loop I never knew existed... The keelboats in Paris have an on-board BGM loop much in the style of Big Thunder, The Land, Splash Mountain WDW and the Mile Long Bar tracks. The tracklist includes "Oh Susanna" (not the Land/BTM version as far as I can remember), "Polly-Wolly-Doodle" and "She'll Be Coming 'Round the Mountain"... Anybody have any idea where this may come from originally?

Very interesting. I have been looking for a version of Coming Round the Mountain that is used in the Garden Grill BGM that is not used anywhere else in WDW (or DL as far as I can tell). I really want to track down a recording of this now. Do you have any other information about the track list? Perhaps some of the other tracks I cannot identify in the Garden Grill BGM are also included.

I vaguely recall WDW putting tape players in the keelboats in the mid-80's to play a BGM track that would mute whenever you keyed the microphone to spiel. I believe it was around the same time that they put a recorded spiel on the riverboat.

I have seen 6 tracks from the Keel Boats making the rounds before, although I have no idea if they are specific to WDW. From what I recall, each track is only a few minutes long.

The WDW Keelboat music is slow and meadering-a heavy Plunk type banjo. The Disneyland Keelboat music is very fast and upbeat-there is also a piano in the background --one tune is "Oh Those Golden Slippers" The WDW & DL keelboat music is very very different sounding.

The DLRP loop is fast and upbeat as well and indeed has nothing in common with the WDW tracks online. The version of "Polly Wolly Doodle" may actually be the same as used on BTM Paris and on the Country Bears album (of which I still seek a copy here in Europe, btw).

I don't have a tracklist yet, but I'm likely to hear it a lot this summer...

"I'm likely to hear it a lot this summer" ... are yougoing to work at the Keelboats?? Seems to me to be the only way one would hear a lot of it ... while the tour on the keelboats is fun the line makes it an attraction not to do too often during the high season... but I am sure to drop by at least once ... if only to say hello to you and to give the loop another listen, since I can't remember anything of it :-(

For the moment, even on crowded weekends there actually isn't much of a queue for the keelboats. This might be because of its position way in the back of Frontierland and due to the fact that it's not mentioned on the park map.

Listening to a recording of "Golden Slippers," it does ring a bell and might very well be part of the loop. I should be able to give more information soon.

(Sorry for digging up this old topic, but I was without an internet connection for a while.)

So, I've managed to catch a recording of the loop... nothing to add to a collection, but it ought to do for identifying the tracks. The loop is actually very short, designed to fit the ride cycle of eleven minutes, and the tracklist (so far) is:

1. ?
2. Oh Susannah
3. Polly Wolly Doodle
4. ?
5. ?
6. She'll Be Coming 'Round the Mountain

If anyone cares to give it a listen, send me a PM...

Thanks for sending me a link to your recording. I'll have to take a closer listen to it in the next few days, but a lot if it sounds like tracks that were released on WDWF or otherwise used in the Splash Mountain queue loop at WDW/TDL. Is your recording the full loop?

Yeah, it's roughly adapted to the boat's cycle time of load/tour/unload. After these six tracks the loop stops and the pilot has to reset it for the next cycle.

David:

Having listened to your track, here is what I can add:

01. Froggy Went a Courtin' (WDWF version)
02. Oh Susannah (neither of the WDWF versions)
03. Polly Wolly Doodle (WDWF version)
04. Goober Peas (WDWF version)
05. Unknown (but the tune is familiar)
06. Coming 'Round the Mountain (same version used at MK Splash Mountain)

Hope this helps; I'll listen to the unknown track again later and see what I can come up with.

Nice work guys! I love finding that we already have pieces for loops in our collection. Keep us updated on that unknown track.

I was disappointed to find out that the Coming Round the Mountain track was not the version used in the Garden Grill, but, rather, is one of the unreleased tracks from the WDW Splash Mountain queue. I need that Garden Grill track!

Thanks wedroy1923, so that leaves just one track to identify and three to find! For now I'm glad to have the source of most tracks confirmed. Guess I should have completed my Splash Mountain collection before asking...

I would have come up with the same playlist as Wedroy1923. I did not find the version of "Oh Susannah" used in my collection. In addition, I don't know the name of track 05 and, like Wedroy1923, it sounds familiar to me. But neither of these tracks are used in the loops to Splash Mountain or Big Thunder Mountain in DL, WDW, TDL, or DLP, at least based on the recordings I have.

Is it possible to capture this loop via induction recording?

It's difficult. During the tour the music is constantly interrupted by the pilot's spiels... I might find a way eventually, but for now I don't have the equipment.

Tried it but the speaker is in the roof and one gets very odd looks from the CMs as you have to stand up (and they tell you to sit down again). I tried a live recording (looking really stupid with a stereo mic clipped to my hat to get it as near as possible to the source but not a very good result. I suppose a long pole may work but I'm not that brave ;D
I have a far better recording of a ride-through from the early 90's when the boats were running on a more regular basis (they have been out of commission for such a long time that even City Hall didn't know what I was talking about). Now they are back and all refurbished, the inane chatter of the crew seems even more than it was (I was riding last Thursday) .
If that recording is still available (however poor), I'd really like to have a copy please.
This ride is one of my favorites and I was over the moon to see it back again.

Yep... telling people to remain seated and inane chatter is what we... um, they're being payed for. Well, that and bringing the boats back in without an accident.

I'd be interested in a recording of the keelboat's original spiels, by the way...

Well I hope it wasn't you last Thursday afternoon.
I did a one take ride-through and, on watching the video, there was less than one minute of music - all the rest is chatter and IN FRENCH (my French is very poor so couldn't understand much at all - mainly what restaurants were in the area we were passing.
The longest music was around 6 seconds ( OH Suzanna) before they broke in again
Still, lovely to ride the Coyote again.
