I was in Virgin Records in Boston on Saturday when the lightning bolt hit me.

I had just reached the refuge of the World Music, Jazz, and Blues section when I heard her voice come out of a speaker above me. I instantly recognized it as one of the vocalists on the current Animal Kingdom Lodge(AKL) music loop being played in the lodge and grounds. And speaking of lightning bolts, I quickly bolted up to the registers to ask someone if they knew who was singing. As opposed to the response I've been getting at the AKL, the fellow at the register immediately produced the sample CD, and then brought me over to an available copy.

Oumou Sangare is the artist. Here are some of the notes from the back of the CD (2 CD set) simply called, "Oumou," on World Circuit/Nonesuch:

"Oumou Sangare is Mali's great diva, champion of women's rights, and one of the world's most astounding female voices. Her idiom is the hauntingly beautiful and hypnotically rhythmic home-grown music that has become her trademark: wassoulou.
Compiled by Charlie Gillett and Nick Gold this album contains 8 new songs never before released on CD, alongside a career retrospective of 12 of the best tracks from her previous acclaimed albums. All tracks have been digitally remastered and the CD booklet contains song notes by Oumou Sangare herself."

Simply said, I've been captivated by Oumou for the past few days. Some of the reason may be the largely acoustic, "roots music" feel of many of the songs, but it mostly may be the almost hypnotic beauty of the music. Two of the songs--definitely--"Sabu" and "N'Guatu" are in the current AKL music loop. "Saa Magni" may also be in there, but I'm not as sure on that one. There is also at least one other song of hers in the loop that is not in this CD set(I know this for sure because I recorded part of the song during our last stay in April).

Oumou's music clearly dominates what you hear at the AKL currently, and, in retrospect, I wonder if it's what initially attracted me to the music there in the first place. I can't recommend this collection more highly, for those interested in Disney-related music, and for anyone interested in music which--since we're talking Disney--can carry you off to an exotic--and magical--place.

Finally, a resounding thank you to the Walt Disney Company (I should also throw in Virgin Records) for providing air time to an important artist, in a time when popular music is increasingly dominated by music which, according to Wynton Marsalis, is little more than "profanity over a rhythm track."

Sweet!! She wan't on my 2002 list at all, so there's a big change right there. When were your recordings taken (trying to get a gauge on when that version of the loop has bn playing since)??

I added that info to the list of partial music loops on my site! Hopefully we can get the blanks filled in!!

-Kirsten

Hi Kirsten!

Looking back to the last time I posted on the AKL (a few months ago), Jay wrote that the current loop began in late 2002, and is about 64 minutes. We started going to the AKL in March 2003, and have been there three times since, with the same music loop being played each time in the lobby/grounds.

Speaking of sweet--Oumou Sangare's music is definitely that--totally!

I've been meaning to provide an update on the Animal Kingdom Lodge area music. It looks like now is a good time!

The AKL front desk is still handing out the original list of 29 tracks from when the hotel opened. Those tracks, which total slightly under 2-1/2 hours, are still being played in the pool area.

In late 2002, around the start of the Holiday Season, the lobby and front entrance areas were switched over to a shorter loop lasting approximately 64 minutes. I'm still working on identifying all of those tracks.

Sometime in March or April of 2004, they once again switched over the lobby and front entrance areas to a new loop! This loop is also somewhere in the neighborhood of 60 to 65 minutes.

I just made a MiniDisc recording of the new loop last week. I have yet to transfer the tracks to the PC for editing inside of Adobe Audition. Without having done a comparison yet, it looks like just about every track has been replaced. It's possible that one or two tracks might be the same, but I doubt it.

I will be back at the Lodge on Tuesday and Wednesday of this week, and I plan to grab a recording of the music being played at the rear of the hotel, in the animal viewing area, as it appears to be an entirely different loop (composed mostly of drums). I will also check inside of Mara, the fast food location, but I'm pretty sure they're playing the same loop as the pool area.

More when I know more...

Duh! Forgot to comment on...

The album that you actually want is Worotan, which was released in November of 1996. The compilation CD you mention was released in February of this year...which means it wasn't used for an AKL loop appearing in late 2002.

I can confirm that Sabu is indeed one of the tracks in the late 2002 to early 2004 loop. The other tracks you mention, though, are not a part of that loop. There's a possibility that N'Diya Ni, off of Worotan, is a part of the loop, though. I'll have to do some listening.

I'm fairly certain that the title track, Worotan, appears on the new early 2004 loop...I'll know for certain once I get my recorded tracks off of the MiniDisc and onto the PC where I can play around with them...

More when I know more...

Re:Animal Kingdom Lodge music--artist found!

Hi Jay--thanks for the post, I was getting ready to contact you to see if you'd made any headway on identifying any of the artists.......

Let me clarify a little......we were just at the AKL during the middle of April. I made about a 50 minute recording, and "Sabu" is on it. We've been to the AKL during 3/03 and 8/03 also, and I'm fairly certain that I've heard "N'Guatu"(also from the Worotan CD) during our stays, although I don't have recorded documentation. The other track I was questioning was "Saa Magni", from a 1993 CD "Ko Sira", but I also don't have a recording of that one(when I recorded during this trip and 8/03, I didn't record the entire loop).

The other thing I wanted to say, is that comparing my recording this time to what I have from last August(maybe about 30 minutes at that time), I'd estimate that about six or so tracks are the same; it wasn't obvious to me that the loop had been changed at all, referring to the loop being played in the lobby, bus area, and in front of the lodge. The music being played in the Mara is definitely totally different.

Just to let you know, for recording, after scanning all possibilities, I put my camcorder on a ledge, just below a speaker, at the back of the lodge, just above the stairs that go out to the savannah overlook(facing the savannah, the left set of stairs); I had to slide it under some iron fencing, just made it!

One more thing--I did record part of a track in April that is definitely Oumou, but not on the compilation CD's I have--so in April, she was at least represented with "Sabu", and that other unknown track.

If Sabu is on your recording you were there before they changed the loop. Sabu is most definitely not on the current loop.

My guess had been that the loop was changed sometime in March or April. I was at the AKL in February and it was unchanged. When I was there in late April, and again in early May, I knew the tracks had been changed, as I no longer recognized any of them. Your mentioning that you heard Sabu in mid April confirms that the change was made in late April.

I'm at the AKL about once a month, sometimes less often, sometimes more often, and I'm pretty sure they have been playing the same loop from late 2002 until sometime in late April of this year.

When I got back over there last week with my MiniDisc recorder, and sat there for just over an hour to make the recording, it became apparent that everything was new. There's even a track with slide guitar that sounds like it belongs over at the Polynesian! And there's no sign of Sabu anymore. :(

Sabu was one of the dead giveaways that the same loop was in use during all that time. It was a very recognizable track. In fact, my daughter referred to it as the "Welcome Song" at the AKL, since it repeated every hour, and, strangely, always seemed to be playing whenever we would arrive at the hotel. ;)
I'm fairly certain that I've heard "N'Guatu" (also from the Worotan CD) during our stays, although I don't have recorded documentation.

I spoke too soon earlier! I was listening to the wrong track on Worotan.

Yes, N'Guatu is also part of the late 2002 to early 2004 loop. :)

On my own recording, Sabu is Track 06 and N'Guatu is Track 19.
The other track I was questioning was "Saa Magni", from a 1993 CD "Ko Sira"

I'm pretty sure this is not on any of my recordings. I'll have to check later...
comparing my recording this time to what I have from last August (maybe about 30 minutes at that time), I'd estimate that about six or so tracks are the same

Well, since you were there before the change, all 21 of the tracks should be the same. :p
I did record part of a track in April that is definitely Oumou, but not on the compilation CD's I have--so in April, she was at least represented with "Sabu", and that other unknown track.

I don't have the time to study the recordings right now, but it's possible that Oumou might have had a third track on the late 2002 to April 2004 loop. In addition to Track 06 Sabu and Track 19 N'Guatu, it's possible that Track 18 is also hers. More when I have time for some serious listening...

I'll try to spend some time on this during the weekend. Like I said earlier, I'm almost positive that the Worotan title track is on the brand new loop.

Okay, confirmed, N'Diya Ni is Track 18 on my recording of the late 2002 to early 2004 AKL entrance/lobby loop.

06. Sabu
18. N'Diya Ni
19. N'Guatu

I've got to get going... I need to be at the AKL by 3 pm...

Re:Animal Kingdom Lodge music--artist found!

Hi Jay--

Thanks for your work, looks like we've made some headway! I knew that "N'Guatu" was in there; and I'll bet that the song I only recorded part of in April must be "N'Diya Ni", which is not on my compilation set, so I can't be sure--looks like I'll need to get the "Worotan" CD.

I was confused there at first, but I guess it's definite--the music loop was changed sometime shortly after we left in mid-April. No more "Sabu"; thanks for the story about your daughter naming it "The Welcome Song"--Oumou's sound certainly was dominant at the AKL. Let me know if she's still on the current loop when you get back(you were fairly certain she was), and any other observations about the new music!

Thanks,
Mike

Re:Animal Kingdom Lodge music--artist found!

Just a quick follow-up--I was able to sample "N'Diya Ni" on the Tower Records site, and that IS the song I only recorded part of! Unfortunately, "Worotan" seems to be out of stock on amazon, and out of print on Tower, so it may take some searching to get a hold of a copy....

Re:Animal Kingdom Lodge music--artist found!

Another addendum--just did a quick web search--and guess who claims to have the CD for $13.88--none other than that cultural icon, WAL-MART!!!!

Can I do the deed........

Wow! You guys have done some serious work! I am impressed an inspired to go after a couple CD's. Thanks!

Re:Animal Kingdom Lodge music--artist found!

You're all welcome, glad to share this find with everyone!

It's amazing (and a fun voyage of discovery to boot!) where "Disney music" can lead you, which is alot of its attraction for me. Oumou's music is not to be missed--now if only the Disney folks could update the track list provided at the AKL, "the word" could be spread a little more readily!

Re: Animal Kingdom Lodge music--artist found!

So does anyone have any definitive information on the loops that have at AKL? At the time these old posts were made, there appears to have been four separate loops:

Entrance / Interior

1) Original - 2002 - Has this also always been the pool side BGM?

2) 2002 - 2004

3) 2004 - Present? - Has there been an update since 2004?

Exterior - Rear

4) Drum BGM (which is currently still playing).

Are there accurate track lists for these loops, in particular, the "Drum BGM?"

Entrance and Lobby Area Music I-IV

Here is the track list for the original area music loop that played in the Entrance and Lobby area for Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge from Opening Day on April 16, 2001 until sometime in November of 2002.

I made an induction recording of this music from a front entrance speaker in the fall of 2001. Aided by a list of albums and song titles provided to me by the Front Desk, I was able to use the recording to determine that the music is actually played in — get ready for it — alphabetical order!

The final track, Go Ralom, was mislabeled as Yo Ralom by the person who put together the loop on his/her PC, and that is why it plays as Track 29 instead of Track 11 where it "belongs."

Imagine a professional DJ playing music in alphabetical order instead of picking tracks that segue properly while setting a particular mood and tempo!

Re: Entrance and Lobby Area Music II

To date, I haven't had any luck searching through the Nonesuch Explorer Series and Smithsonian Folkways recordings. We can probably rule out much of the Explorer recordings as they did not start to trickle out onto CD until very late in 2002.

The good news is that since the titles need to fit into alphabetical order, many tracks, even entire albums, can be excluded rather quickly.

For those who'd like to play along with the home game version of our show, I have updated the 2002-2004 track listing to include 64 kbps mono MP3s of the 7 5 unknown tracks.

Re: Entrance and Lobby Area Music IV

Good News: Using new equipment, I've got a most excellent recording of the Entrance and Lobby Area Music. And that's even without running it through software to clean it up.

Bad News: The music is not the same as my 2004 recording ... and I have no idea when they made the change.

More Good News: I already know four of the tracks.

More Bad News: I just missed out on meeting Horizons today.

Arusha Rock: I saw a couple of pretty zebras.
