Our Aladdin DVD set that we ordered in August at WDW arrived yesterday, three days before the scheduled Tuesday release!
Just this morning, we jumped to some of the musically-related bonus features before even viewing the movie. "Alan Menken: Musical Renaissance Man" is a wonderful 20-minute piece, full of Alan's reflections on his life and music. A particulary poignant moment for me was when an observation was made that many current flourishing teenage musical talents were actually where they were today because they grew up listening to the wondrous musical creations of Alan Menken. I turned toward our fourteen year old son, who was also watching the piece, and thought the exact same, that his profound love of music is, at least in part, due to listening to the timeless music created by Alan, Howard, Tim, Stephen, and so many others associated with the Walt Disney Company over the past decade.
Unfortunately, I also felt an overwhelming sense of loss of a musical legacy which seems to be in jeopardy with the current direction of Disney film making...... is the music truly gone?
